Library Club Assembly…

October 19, 2012-

Today is the Library Club Assembly….and Dress Up as Your Favorite (book) Character Day!

With Daddy's help we turned Ava into Pippi Longstocking (we *just* finished reading Pippi …for the third time!!!! Thanks, Sally!).  Annika dressed up in black as Kamikaze (apparently a thief in the How To Train Your Dragon series).

Ava participated in Library Club- which is an optional after school activity for first and second graders at IST.  The Library Clubians have been working on this assembly for several weeks.  And today is the day they're presenting it!!!

Off to school we go!!!!

Walking "Pippi" to school. Don't you love that she's wearing Daddy's shoes????

Ava had a hard time sitting on the floor because of her giant shoes. So the librarian allowed her to sit on the chair.

The entire primary school – students and teachers- all dressed up as their favorite characters. Ava's teachers (lower right of the photo) came dressed up as Waldo (USA name) or Wally (from the Where is Waldo or Where is Wally book series).

Let's get started!

Our cute Pippi did a wonderful job speaking clearly. She did great!

I helped out a *tiny* bit with the Library Club (since I try to volunteer at the library on Thursday afternoons).  In particular I worked with these fine students in the photo below to help them figure out "riddles" for this assembly:

Ava's riddle: Who messes up the house when the mother is out?

After the riddles came the "parade" of books from the shortlist of the Panda Book Awards for this year.  The students introduced the younger reader books. You can read a little more about the Panda Book Awards here. Many international schools in China participate in this book reading incentive- and at the end of the year the students/schools/teachers/parents can vote for their favorite Panda books.  The books are grouped in different reading levels- from younger reader all the way to mature reader. :

Ava is holding up Cloudette (which we read back in Potosi!)

The kids then did a funny skit centered around one of the Panda Books, More Bears!. Every time you see the More Bears! on the screen you're supposed to yell, "More Bears!".

It's a funny book about an author is gets over run by the addition of bears in his story:

The kids had so much fun running over and dumping more teddy bears on Benny (who's sitting in the chair and pretending to be the author). As you can see the "author" is being swallowed alive by all the bears!

I'm not going to give away the ending of the story…as it has a surprise ending. Maybe you can guess what happens from this photo??

IMG_6812

"We like to read it, read it! We like to read it, read it! We like to READ IT!!!"

Ha ha ha ha!!!!  The entire school really enjoyed the Library Club's assembly…several times during the skits the teachers had to take a moment to settle the kids down.  Lots of laughing!  I know the primary school librarian was concerned about how well it would go (there's never enough time….or enough rehearsals) but EVERYONE LOVED IT!

Pippi is helping me collect all our teddy bears we loaned for the More Bears! skit. Seriously, how did we end up with so many bears??? They filled up a GIANT garbage bag! I felt like Santa hauling them home! PS What am I going to do about my hair????

Up close view of our darling Pippi:

Daddy's neat little trick to make her braids stick out. He cut up wire clothes hanger and bent it to fit her head. It wasn't the most comfortable but it stayed in place for the assembly. We removed it afterwards.

Pippi's costume: dress from me (there's a story in the book where Pippi wears a fine lady's dress, she's got freckles all over and her braids are sticking out. Oh! And how could I forget the huge shoes???
