Hohhot:: Part Two (of Journey into Inner Mongolia with Friends)

Hi!

I believe I last left you on our Inner Mongolia (have to clarify on the Inner part as we haven't crossed over the Chinese border) journey on Saturday night.

Oh, I can't begin to tell you how nice it was to gaze up and see all those stars and the Milky Way!!!  The sad thing is that the cold finally got to us and we went in to our respective yurts and "went to sleep".  Actually, it was more like a night filled with tossing and turning.  At least the kids seemed to sleep well!  I wish I was a kid again who doesn't mind sleeping on a board.  My back just can't handle that.

I hope you can stay warm enough tonight!  It is CHILLY!!!

September 9, 2012-

GOOD MORNING!!!!!!!

So…how well did you sleep??????

I can't say that I actually slept at all.  I know that Ava did.  She slept rather peacefully in the bed next to mine.  Perhaps if we'd shared beds like our friends did (all four of them decided to sleep in one yurt as opposed to two yurts).

IMG_8300

My morning ray of sunshine!

I don't know about you but I'm ready to get out of bed and get something to eat for breakfast! I can seeing people queuing up for the breakfast buffet.  I wonder what kinds of food we'll get…..

We'd better get in line if we want to get any breakfast:

IMG_8303

Oh my! That's quite a line!!! Funny thing, even though they're Chinese they didn't seem to cut in front of each other. (although Croydon and Debbie "helped" them out by blocking the people standing behind us in line from sneaking in front. hee hee hee).

Marko, Annika and Juandre at breakfast

So….what's for breakfast????  Man tou (plain, steam bread), slices of deep fried, crisp man tou (perhaps from yesterday's man tou?), hot milk (doesn't taste like cow's milk though) or soup, random mushed veggies and a hard boiled egg (we had to pay extra for the eggs!).  I heard a comment (from someone in our group) likening our meal to those served perhaps on Alcatraz.  LOL!  It was mostly edible.  ;-)

IMG_8308

Rations- I mean Breakfast.  Bowl of hot milk, man tou (those are the things that look like rolls), slices of deep fried man tou (next to the "rolls"), hard boiled egg and steamed "weeds".

**I'm pausing to interrupt to tell you that I'm beyond frustrated with how absurdly slow our internet is at the moment.  It might take days not hours to get this post finished at the rate they're uploading!  And they said we were upgraded to the faster speed a few days ago. HA!**

Grace says it's time to pack up and head out….but not before one last stop at the gift shop.  Annika *really* wants to get something from the shop but last night they wouldn't give her the time of day!  The folks in the shop didn't even acknowledge us.  Ay! ay! ay!  We told Annika that if she wanted something she would have to ask how much it is IN CHINESE.  Thank goodness the people were much more interested in potential customers this morning….

IMG_5760

That hat that Annika chose….don't be fooled. It's not leather. (it's made of a -in my opinion- weird fabric) But hey!  She likes it!!!

And of course we had to get something for Ava…. (because you know that traveling is all about getting souvenirs.  oh Wait!  Noooooo….traveling isn't about getting souvenirs!  Can somebody please tell the girls this????)

IMG_5762

It's a little yurt shaped box! (the lid comes off and it's a tiny storage box)

Let's pack up our bags and move out!

One last quick look around the yurt before we leave:

IMG_8319

Bags are packed! Do you see the TV in the background????

Back on the mini bus:

IMG_8338

The kids amusing each other with games. We've got about a two-hour drive until our first stop.

IMG_5779

We had to stop here for a moment….our driver had to leave a piece of paper under a rock located on that barrel (the one with the folded green umbrella on top). Apparently this is the way the drivers register their departure from the grasslands (or maybe I was missing something???). Huh???? Seems like an efficient system. Not!

First stop: Zhaojun Tomb just outside Hohhot.

IMG_8343Wang Zhaojun is called one of the four most beautiful women in ancient China. She helped to unify China via her marriage.  Although this site is called her tomb Grace mentioned that it really isn't a tomb (no one knows where she really is buried).  This site just commemorates Zhaojun.

IMG_8349

Zhaojun surrounded by three silly kids!

Life size models of Zhaojun, her husband (Khan), and people of the nomadic tribe

IMG_5786

Do you see that hill in the background? I think we'll head up there.

IMG_8363

View from up top of the hill.

IMG_8360

Of course they have tons of souvenirs for sale on top.

IMG_8358

IMG_8361

Shoe insoles anyone??????

IMG_5801

IMG_8365

Time to head back down the hill….

Well, I guess we'd better make good on a promise we made to the kids before going up the hill….we said that if they went up the hill (with minimal complaining) we'd get them ice cream/popsicles afterwards.  :-)  It's time for a quick ice cream break!

**************************************************************************

Time to get back on the bus.  It's time for lunch!  Grace says she's taking us to a hotpot restaurant.  Yaaaaay!!!!  We LOVE hotpot!!!!

IMG_5804

IMG_5805

Annika's million dollar smile! Makes me so happy to see her smile!!!

Our giant round table….we each got our own pot!

IMG_5807

Grace ordered lots and lots of different things for the hotpot. I LOOOOOOVE hotpot! (have I mentioned that before????) Lots of extremely thinly sliced meats, veggies (my favorite might be thin slices of winter squash), and shrimp balls.

We had one sad incident while in the restaurant.  Juandre accidentally put his fingers in the pot of boiling stock and boy- does it burn and hurt!  Thankfully, next door (sort of attached to the restaurant in a weird sort of way) there was a supermarket and Croydon was able to get ice for him.  :-(

 *************************************************************************

Time to get back in the mini bus!  Now we're headed to the General Government Office in Hohhot.

IMG_5811

This building was apparently the place where many generals and, later, many other government officials called this home and their offices.

IMG_5812

IMG_5814

IMG_5815

The kids each got a turn to put on their war faces (or pretend that they were generals):

IMG_5817

The fierce General Annika! Don't mess with her!

IMG_5818

General Juandre!

IMG_5819

General Ava!

IMG_5820

General Marko!

Furs for sale outside the museum:

IMG_5822

Back on the mini bus!!!  Time to head to our last destination on our schedule….    The Inner Mongolia Museum

IMG_5823This museum is famous for the fossils and dinosaur remains dug up in Inner and Outer Mongolia.  We certainly can't resist looking at those!!!

IMG_5834

IMG_8435

Want to learn more about this dinosaur???

IMG_8436

You'll only learn about this dinosaur if you can read Chinese!!!!

IMG_8438
This is one HUUUUUUGE dinosaur skeleton:

IMG_8441

IMG_8447

In another exhibit we found what appears to be the console of Dr. Who's Tardis….

IMG_5843

Okay, so it's not really the Tardis's console but doesn't it look like it????

IMG_8475

Interesting shaped vials of various minerals

IMG_8514

God's Favored Ones????? Ummm…..

Ah, apparently God's Favored Ones refers to Genghis Khan!

IMG_8518

Do you see the script on the left hand side??? That's Mongolian. It's a very pretty and artistic looking script!

IMG_5852

This is what I imagine a real yurt to look like.

IMG_8523

Now, when the kids start sitting down…..you know it's time to leave!!!! At least they're still smiling.

IMG_8526

Is this the throne from Genghis Khan? It's cool looking anyway.

IMG_8527

A very beautiful…dress? costume? I have no idea what it's called.

Time to go!  Poor Croydon already left the museum earlier due to some bad tummy trouble.

IMG_8531

More furs for sale:

IMG_8535

Are they real? And if they are real where in China did they find so many wild animals to kill???? Do wild animals actually exist in China????

It's time to head to the airport….

IMG_8537

Time to say good bye to our friendly and kind tour-guide, Grace.

Bye Grace!  Thank you so much for being our tour guide!!!

IMG_8540

We're all checked in and through airport security….that was a breeze!

Let's go find some food to eat~ who knows when we'll get home (we should be home in time for dinner but you know as well as I do that flights in China NEVER fly on schedule!).

IMG_8541

Noodles, soup, sodas, and ice cream bars. Sounds like a decent dinner, right???

IMG_1820

Waiting….waiting ….waiting at our gate. Oops. They just changed our gate. Time to move! And yes, the kids attracted a LOT of attraction!!!!!

IMG_8543

The white board explaining that our flight is delayed. So….what else is new????

IMG_8545

Woo Hoo!!!! Finally on the plane! I think we're all going to take a nap. Thank goodness it's a short flight. We'll be home soon now!

Home at last!!!  Only several hours late….but at least we're all home safe and sound.  And some kids are in better shape than others.  ;-)

I think we all agree- WE HAD A FANTASTIC TRIP!!!!  HUGE THANKS to Croydon, Debbie, Marko and Juandre for doing this trip with us.  It was a TON more FUN with you!!!!!!
