Happy belated Valentine's Day!!!!?!
ummmm….so I guess I need to keep up with my blog posts!
I just wanted to share with you some of the sugar cookies we baked for Valentine's Day (they were devoured the weekend before the Big Heart Day).
Annika and I made sugar cookie dough on Saturday and then the girls helped cut out the heart shapes on Sunday.
The very sweet thing is that I didn't bring or buy these cookie cutters. I found them, still new in the box, in one of our kitchen cabinets. I don't think it could have been any more perfect.
Just for the record…that is not a regular sized cookie sheet. A normal sized cookie sheet would NOT fit into our tiny oven. The oven is another one of those "you know you're in China…" instances. For starters, it's tiny. And the temperature gauge is only in Celsius (which actually isn't a problem and I know the rest of the world deals in Celsius). And there are only a handful of temperature settings that you use a dial to set (so it's never accurate or precise). It's anyones guess what the actual temperature inside the oven is. And the timer doesn't work. And…..
Lots and lots of hearts….Pretty and plain. I did end up making a glaze with powdered sugar but they're weren't fancy (no food coloring and no sprinkles).
PS. Sugar cookies made with shortening aren't as good as sugar cookies made with real butter. Just thought you'd like to know. (these were made with shortening as the butter costs $5 …and it's not even a pound of butter!)

The cookies still look good. How cool that the cutters were sitting there, waiting for you to use them!
For what it’s worth, I use a recipe that calls for half butter, half shortening. I rarely spend $ on butter, so I use half-margarine, half-shortening & they still turn out well. If you can find margarine…
