Open Air Museum in Shirakawa-go

October 3, 2012 –

I hope everybody feels all niiiiiiiice and relaaaaaaaaxed after our dip in the hot springs! I know I do!

Hmmmmmm….the girls are asking for a treat.  What do you think we should get? How about some soft serve vanilla ice cream in a cone?

Annika certainly looks like she's happy to have some ice cream!

Watching some workers re-roof one of the thatched houses:

That looks like HARD work!

Let's head over to the open air museum. We've got to cross back over the suspension bridge.  I think we've got a coupon somewhere that gets us in at a discount. Hang on…Oh!  I've found the coupon!

Crossing over the bridge now. The museum is off to our far left (the buildings you see are actually souvenir shops and not part of the museum).

A water wheel

We played with this water feature for a while. We tried to get the water flowing faster to make the wooden bucket fill faster. 🙂 We eventually got to see the bucket fill and tip!

Check out the roofs!

Crawling up the steep stairs in one of the open-to-the-public houses

You can see how the roof is made- with strong rope and branches lashed together to form a network.

Any building we entered a sign requested that we remove our shoes.  Or shose. ;-)

No shose allowed!!!!!

Cool open fire pit with a hanging pot and weight. How is it that these open fire pits are safe in a wooden house???

Hopping on the rocks

Many of the buildings were actually moved from near by villages and constructed at this museum.  It's difficult to tell if this is an example of how a village might have looked like or this is a random selection of the gassho buildings .

Gorgeous zinnias with the bell tower in the background. Obviously fires are a huge ordeal for houses made of wood and grass!

Near the exit of the museum we discovered a rustic swing set. Perfect for two girls to work off their energy!!!!

Crazy long hair swinging and swaying in the air!

I hope you enjoyed our stroll through the open air museum.  I think it's time for lunch….Hmmmm….we'll let  you know when we find a restaurant!  See you soon!
